Are you lucky enough to be enjoying this fourth of July on the water? If so remember safety first! Here are some tips to keep in mind when you’re out cruising in the sun:
- Life Jacket: Whenever you go boating, make sure you have well-fitted life jackets. Make sure that everyone wears their life jacket at all times while on the water.
- Drinking: One of the most important boat safety tips is ‘don’t drink and go boating’. Sadly many boating deaths and injuries are related to alcohol use. - Watch for other boats and people. Stay at least 200 feet away from other watercraft.
- Cut off the engine when swimmers are near. Accidents can occur very quickly. A mistake could cost a life.
- Don’t allow anyone to stand up when the boat is in motion. Even slow speeds can result in terrible accidents. Falling overboard may result in an injury which may result in drowning.
- Go slowly when approaching docks, walls and any other hard surfaces. These can damage the hull or trap a person who falls into the water.
