Happy Independence Day!

Are you lucky enough to be enjoying this fourth of July on the water? If so remember safety first! Here are some tips to keep in mind when you’re out cruising in the sun:

  • Life Jacket: Whenever you go boating, make sure you have well-fitted life jackets. When you arrive at Tailrace marina at Lake Wylie, the pontoon boat rental staff will help each person in your party select the right life jacket. Make sure that everyone wears their life jacket at all times while on the water.
  • Drinking: One of the most important boat safety tips is ‘don’t drink and go boating’. Sadly many boating deaths and injuries are related to alcohol use. Make sure everyone in your group understands that it is not wise to drink alcoholic beverages on any boat including your pontoon boat rental. Don’t drink before your trip and don’t drink while on your trip.
  • Experienced Driver: Drivers should be experienced before taking out a watercraft and also carry an appropriate watercraft license. Do not allow children or teenagers to drive the boat as they lack the wisdom and instincts of an older driver. When you ask for a boat rental, the staff will review the boat’s controls with the driver.

Rules of the Waterways

  • Watch for other boats and people. Stay at least 200 feet away from other watercraft.
  • Cut off the engine when swimmers are near. Accidents can occur very quickly. A mistake could cost a life.
  • Don’t allow anyone to stand up when the boat is in motion. Even slow speeds can result in terrible accidents. Falling overboard may result in an injury which may result in drowning.
  • Go slowly when approaching docks, walls and any other hard surfaces. These can damage the hull or trap a person who falls into the water.
